The IXP1200 network processor family combines the processing capability of an Intel® StrongARM processor core with the flexibility and scalability of parallel programmable multithreaded microengines. In conjunction with the Intel IXDP1200 Advanced Development Platform and the Intel IXA SDK, the IXP1200 network processor family forms the foundation of a total development environment that can dramatically accelerate the design and validation of next-generation network products.
Next-generation network solutions must meet the growing user demand for new value-added services: multi-service switches, broadband access platforms, Web switches, network appliances, systems designed for Layer 2/3 forwarding, protocol conversion, quality of service (QoS), filtering/firewalling, virtual private networks (VPNs), load balancing, remote monitoring (RMON), and intrusion detection.
In addition to implementing multiple services and supporting a variety of protocols under stringent time-to-market deadlines, manufacturers of networking equipment must deliver products that can be easily upgraded in software. This capability is important because it can facilitate the cost-effective deployment of new value-added services without extensive hardware replacement.
